How to Choose the Right Touchscreen for Harsh Environments

Selecting an HMI for an air-conditioned control room is easy. Selecting one for a dusty sawmill in regional NSW or a humid food processing plant in Queensland is a different story altogether. When the environment is harsh, the “type” of touchscreen technology you choose matters as much as the resolution.

Resistive vs. Capacitive: The Glove Test

Most consumer tablets use “capacitive” screens (like your smartphone). These are great for swiping, but they often fail if the operator is wearing heavy work gloves or if there is moisture on the screen.

The GMT MSG-156E uses a 4-wire precision resistor circuit.

  • Pressure-Activated: It reacts to pressure, meaning it works perfectly with gloves, styluses, or even the end of a tool.
  • Contaminant Resistant: It isn’t “confused” by a drop of oil, a splash of water, or a layer of dust on the surface.

Beyond the Screen

In harsh environments, you also need to look at the housing. A metal case is essential for dissipating heat and protecting against electromagnetic interference (EMI). Combined with an IP65 front panel rating, your HMI becomes a rugged terminal that can survive the daily rigours of Australian industry.
